“Time of Truth” è senza ombra di dubbio uno dei dischi fondamentali del “mio” 2008. Maggiormente diretto del suo pur sontuoso predecessore (“The age of the return”), il terzo lavoro dei Martiria, riesce contemporaneamente a conquistare all’istante e a crescere ascolto dopo ascolto, un risultato difficile da conseguire anche per molti dei più blasonati protagonisti della scena metallica internazionale. Il misto di cultura, forza espressiva, suggestione e magia sprigionato dalla musica dei nostri è qualcosa di veramente raro e degno di suprema attenzione (...)
Ciao Andy! Complimenti davvero … un nuovo disco e un altro centro pieno! Raccontaci tutto sulla genesi di “Time of Truth”...
Ciao Marco, e un grande saluto a tutti i lettori di Eutk.net, bene “Time of Truth” forse è stato il più lungo parto dei Martiria discograficamente parlando, diverse sono state le motivazioni nel ritardo di pubblicazione di questo nostro terzo lavoro.
Potrei cominciare a dire che tutto il disco doveva essere registrato interamente nello studio Powerzone, ma per motivazioni legate alla chiusura (nostro malgrado) della label ci siamo trovati in una situazione poco gestibile, inoltre i temi dell’album sono stati discussi molto anche fra noi, inizialmente avevamo un’altra idea, ma poi man mano che il tempo passava, si è fatta strada l’idea di perseguire una serie di racconti (storici, e non) che evidenziassero le differenze nell’approccio all’essenza dell’anima, esercitando una volontà totale nel tirare fuori l’emotività di tutti i “protagonisti” dei testi sapientemente composti dall’ormai compagno d’avventura Marco Capelli. Per il profilo musicale avevo comunque nella mente l’idea di un disco che dovesse suonare “più facile” ma allo stesso tempo pregno di emotività, e devo dire nuovamente che su questo aspetto un grande lavoro lo ha fatto Rick …. Grande tanto quanto l’appoggio morale e decisamente più concreto sull’aspetto musicale di Derek …oltre che l’aiuto prezioso dell’amico Fabrizio alla batteria. Già solo queste brevi indicazioni possono darti idea di quel che è stata la genesi del nuovo album. (continue)

Andy, come mai ci è voluto tanto tempo per vedervi suonare dal vivo?
La situazione romana, per i concerti, è molto difficile. Non sempre si trovano organizzatori che ti garantiscano almeno il rimborso spese, e dato che noi tutti siamo gente adulta, lavoriamo, abbiamo famiglia, siamo dei veri e propri “veterani” (ride), non chiediamo certo di guadagnarci, ma il rimborso spese è il minimo! Inoltre ci sono anche problemi logistici: grazie alla disponibilità di Dario (Daneluz, nda, primo singer della band) alla voce ci siamo spinti in questa impresa, per fortuna suoneremo anche al prossimo PLAY IT LOUD e ci sarà Rick Anderson. In questo caso tutto si basa sullo sforzo di Giuliano (Mazzardi, organizzatore del festival, nda), di fatto abbiamo preso molti contatti, ad esempio per il KEEP IT TRUE, ma non siamo riusciti a trovare un accordo. Giuliano invece vive la cosa in modo diverso, con la passione dentro, e quindi con lui è stato più facile!
Il PLAY IT LOUD sarà l’unica occasione per vedervi all’opera con Rick?
Non è detto, stiamo valutando la possibilità di aggiungere qualche data immediatamente successiva, ad esempio qualcosa si era mosso in Grecia… (continue)

Ciao Andy, questa è la terza volta che ci sentiamo ma è la prima per From Burn to Now, vuoi illustrare brevemente la storia dei Martiria ai nostri lettori.
Ciao Stefano, compito arduo, cercherò di riassumere. I Martiria nascono nell’ormai lontano 1987, originariamente la band si muoveva su sonorità doom stile Candlemass, primi Black Sabbath, poi dopo un paio di demo la band si è sciolta, solo qualche anno fa dopo svariate esperienze musicali ho deciso di riprendere il progetto apportando alcune modifiche al sound con quel che ora sento più mio, un classico epic metal di stampo romantico con momenti acustici, e arricchito di strumenti classici (archi, ottoni, liuto,ecc). La sonorità evidentemente riprende in parte lo stile dei mitici Warlord di Bill Tsamis che è stato tra l’ altro fautore dell’ incontro artistico tra i Martiria è l’ attuale singer Rick Anderson (già conosciuto negli stessi Warlrod col nome di Damien King III). Dal 2003 siamo quindi costantemente al lavoro per la realizzazione di nuovi brani, e nel 2004 abbiamo pubblicato il nostro album di esordio “The Eternal Soul” per la Hellion brasiliana, e nel 2005 il secondo “The Age of the Return” per l’ Underground Symphony italiana. Stiamo or ora per uscire con la nostra terza fatica che si chiamerà “Time of Truth”, dove ci saranno 10 nuovi brani più una piccola chicca….la cover di “Soliloquy” dei Warlord. (continue)

Hi Andy and Martiria. Maybe we start this interview with the usual introduction of the Band. How comes the band started in 1987 (!!!) and released the first album last year?
Andy: Hi Alex. Well, we can say it was a joke played by destiny? ;) … joking aside, the group Martiria was born in 1987 but during the first ten years we just produced a few live exhibitions and two demo-tapes. During this first phase, also the sound was different, definitely more doom-oriented. Then, for several reasons, we decided to stop playing. It was only two years ago that I decided to resurrect the name “Martiria” for the band I wanted to create, since the sound I had in mind was clearly connected to my musical origins, I thought to give Martiria a second chance. In this new adventure I involved two friends I know since the beginning of my musical activity: Maurizio Capitini (ex Astaroth) that plays the drums and Derek Maniscalco (bass). Just before starting to record the first album, Rick Anderson (aka Damien King III, ex Warlord singer) and Marco Capelli, poet, writer and author of the lyrics of the two albums, joined us.
The lyrics of "The Age Of The Return" are based on the most epic opus ever written.. Which scenes of the bible does it cover?
Rick: Some of the most important stories in the Bible were chosen, such as: John the Baptist, David and Goliath, Judas' betrayal of Jesus, The crucifixion of Christ, The Second Coming of Christ plus many others.
Marco: Actually, it was sort of an instinctive choice, between the many stories of the bible, we just picked the ones that someway stimulated our imagination. Nevertheless, there is a threadbetween the different songs, even if it’s not the result of a deliberated choice… It’s some sort… of mystery! (continue)

Hi Andy and thanks very much for this interview. I'm not going to ask you about the history of the band, but I'm really curious to know how come a band like Martiria, which exists since 1987, released its first work just in 2004? You also don't mention any demos in your discography on your website, are there any?
Hi, Alekos, and thanks to you and to Metal perlspective for the space you are giving to us. The fact is that, in these years, Martiria alternated periods of great activity and periods of total inactivity. Mainly the two most important periods are: the beginning (around 1987) and the actual... return, with the publication of the first album (2004).
In the middle there is almost nothing, in fact the group disbanded and all the original members worked in other projects, including the Dunwich (do you know this band?). Martiria's rebirth was an act of nostalgia in the regarding of what it was my first real metal band. Indeed, this rebirth brought a change of direction. Now the band plays a sort of epic-metal, while at the beginning we used to follow the sound of bands like Candlemass or Black Sabbath. In those times we recorded two demos that are not mentioned on our website because I consider them to belong to a completely different era.
I would like Martiria to be considered a new band, since the situation now is completely different! At the beginning there were four boys full of hopes and energy playing into an underground garage, now there are four old friends, full of experience, joining their competence in the name of a passion for this music that's still as lively as the first day!!
